Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was interested in acting during her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor for the school. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her fellow students. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
